Leading Through Every Lens: A Managing Director’s Perspective

By: Elaine Lu

In the dynamic and highly regulated world of medical device manufacturing, effective leadership demands a multidimensional approach. As the Managing Director of a U.S.-owned company specializing in disposable medical devices—including surgical gowns, drapes, and equipment covers—I have come to appreciate the importance of viewing challenges and opportunities through multiple lenses. With 60% of our products exported to the U.S. and another 40% distributed across Europe and Australia, our operations intersect with global supply chain complexities, stringent regulatory frameworks, and evolving market demands. Leading through every lens means balancing strategic vision with operational precision, fostering innovation while ensuring compliance, and driving growth while maintaining unwavering commitment to quality.

A leader’s primary responsibility is to set a clear strategic direction. In our industry, this means anticipating shifts in healthcare needs, regulatory changes, and competitive dynamics. The post-pandemic era has underscored the importance of resilient supply chains and the ability to scale production rapidly. Our strategic focus has been on diversifying sourcing, investing in automation to enhance efficiency, and expanding our footprint in emerging markets while consolidating our position in established ones.

However, strategy is meaningless without execution. Translating high-level goals into actionable plans requires cross-functional collaboration. For instance, when expanding into new markets, we must align R&D with regional regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA 510(k) for the U.S., MDR CE marking for Europe), synchronize production schedules with logistics partners, and ensure sales teams are equipped with market-specific insights. Leadership, in this context, is about creating coherence across disparate functions and ensuring every team member understands their role in the larger mission.

Disposable medical devices are critical to patient and clinician safety, which means quality cannot be compromised. Leading through the operational lens involves instilling a culture of excellence where Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO 13485 standards are non-negotiable. We have implemented rigorous quality control protocols, from raw material inspection to final product sterilization, ensuring compliance with both U.S. and international regulations.

Operational leadership also demands a relentless pursuit of efficiency. Lean manufacturing principles have been instrumental in reducing waste and optimizing throughput. For example, by adopting automated cutting and sealing technologies, we have minimized human error and increased production speed without sacrificing quality. Yet, operational excellence is not just about processes, it’s about people. Regular training programs empower employees to identify inefficiencies and suggest improvements, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Innovation is the lifeblood of any medical device company. The increasing popularity of robotic surgeries presents a significant opportunity for our company. Surgical robots require specialized equipment covers to ensure their proper functioning and sterility during procedures. Our R&D team closely monitors industry trends and technological advancements in robotic surgery to identify unmet needs in the market.

We are actively engaging in partnerships with Global Giants to co-design and develop innovative equipment covers tailored to their robotic surgical systems. These collaborations involve in-depth technical discussions, sharing of expertise, and joint prototyping. By working closely with these global leaders, we can ensure that our products are compatible with their advanced surgical technologies, giving us a competitive edge in this emerging market segment.

A company’s greatest asset is its people. Leading through the human lens means creating an environment where employees feel valued, motivated, and aligned with the company’s mission. We are empowering our employees by giving them more autonomy in their work and encouraging them to take the initiative in solving problems. For example, we have established cross-functional teams to work on projects related to market expansion, production efficiency, and product diversification. These teams are given the freedom to develop and implement their own strategies, fostering a sense of ownership and creativity.

In addition, we have implemented a comprehensive employee recognition program. Employees are recognized and rewarded for their contributions, whether it’s through improving production processes, coming up with innovative ideas, or going the extra mile to support the company’s goals. This not only boosts morale but also encourages continued high performance.

Leading through every lens is not about compartmentalizing these perspectives but integrating them into a cohesive leadership philosophy. In the high-stakes world of medical manufacturing, the ability to pivot between strategic foresight, operational rigor, innovative thinking, and people-centric values is what defines success. As we navigate the complexities of global markets, regulatory landscapes, and technological disruptions, this multifaceted approach ensures we not only meet today’s challenges but also shape the future of healthcare solutions.

By embracing these lenses, leaders can steer their organizations toward sustainable growth, operational excellence, and, most importantly, a meaningful impact on global health.
