Exact Medical Sets the Pace in Europe’s MDR
How early certification became a sales advantage in a highly regulated market

The European Union’s sweeping Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR 2017/745) is reshaping the way medical products are designed, documented and sold. While many manufacturers are still navigating the complex new rulebook, Exact Medical has already crossed the finish line.
The company holds full MDR certification since 2023, years ahead of the final deadlines that stretch from 2026 to 2028. From the outset, Exact Medical deliberately chose to become MDR certified at a very early stage, guided by a strong belief in internationally recognised quality markings. That decision has proven pivotal in an industry where regulatory delays can stall product launches and cost millions.
The Regulatory Backdrop
When MDR replaced the older Medical Device Directive (MDD) on May 26, 2021, it ushered in stricter requirements for clinical evaluation, risk management and post-market surveillance. Recognising the scale of the change, the EU introduced a series of staggered deadlines:
- May 26, 2026 for Class III custom-made implantable devices
- December 31, 2027 for Class III and Class IIb implantable devices
- December 31, 2028 for Class IIa, IIb (non-implantable) and Class I sterile/measuring devices
But these grace periods haven’t translated into smooth sailing. Notified Bodies—the independent organisations that certify devices—have been overwhelmed, creating a backlog that continues to slow down approvals.
Smaller Producers Face Steep Barriers
The cost and effort of MDR certification are daunting, particularly for smaller, low-cost producers outside Europe. Many Chinese manufacturers are expected to forgo MDR certification altogether, given the extensive technical documentation, clinical data and ongoing post-market surveillance now required.
Industry experts warn that this could result in fewer budget competitors in the EU market over the next few years, reshaping the competitive landscape and further highlighting the value of early compliance among established players.
Exact Medical’s Early Bet
Against this backdrop, Exact Medical’s proactive approach stands out. “From day one we believed that quality markings are essential for trust and safety,” the company explains. “That’s why we made the strategic decision to go for MDR certification immediately, long before it became a market requirement.”
The benefits are already clear:
- Uninterrupted market access. While some competitors risk product shortages, Exact’s MDR-compliant portfolio moves freely within the EU.
- Stronger distributor confidence. Hospitals and procurement networks increasingly prioritise certified products, making Exact a preferred partner.
- Sales empowerment. Sales teams can confidently state that every product meets Europe’s toughest safety and performance standards, strengthening tenders and negotiations.
- Operational calm. By sidestepping the last-minute rush, Exact can invest in innovation and customer service rather than firefighting certification delays.
This early adoption also signals brand leadership—a valuable currency in a market where trust and reliability weigh heavily on buying decisions.
Turning Regulation into Opportunity
MDR is often framed as a hurdle, but for Exact Medical it has become a differentiator. The company positions compliance as part of its value proposition, demonstrating rigorous clinical data, transparent post-market surveillance and a long-term commitment to innovation.
For sales teams across the sector, MDR is no longer just about ticking boxes. It requires deeper product knowledge, the ability to explain risk classifications and unique device identifiers, and close collaboration with regulatory colleagues. Those who embrace these skills will be better equipped to navigate complex procurement discussions.
Leading While Others Catch Up
As the final 2026–2028 deadlines loom, many medical device makers remain in scramble mode. Exact Medical, by contrast, is already reaping the rewards of early compliance: faster sales cycles, resilient customer relationships and a growing reputation as a market leader.
And with many low-cost competitors—particularly smaller Chinese producers—expected to step back from the EU market due to the cost and complexity of MDR, Exact Medical’s early move doesn’t just secure compliance. It strengthens market position in a space where reliability and trust will matter more than ever.
In an industry where timing is everything, Exact Medical didn’t wait for the clock to run out. By securing MDR certification already in 2023 and by choosing quality from the very beginning, the company has turned a regulatory mandate into a powerful competitive edge—setting a benchmark for how proactive strategy can redefine success in the medical device market.
